Someone used my debit card

all the way back in Kuwait
DH checked my account since it had a negative balance. They purchased something for over $70 at some haji shop with a weird name. I went to the bank and got the card closed. I will also get reimbursed. I have no idea how they even got my debit card number. I never used it off post and never at the vendors on post (the ones AAFES let them sell) I wish I could track down this jerk off and kick his/her @ss.

Has this happened to anyone before? When you still have your debit card (never lost it) but someone somehow got ahold of the number and made purchases?

One of my friends had that happen to her. She checked her account and somebody used her debt card in California for tennis equipment and something else. Like $1,200 worth. The thing is she had never been to california. The bank thinks they picked up her number through spyware or something. It is scary out there and I hate that things like that can happen. It makes you feel so violated!!!

I am glad that you will get your money back, but still creepy!

Oh gosh I was just gonna PM you about this too. I have no idea how it could have happened. One time some jerk tried taking cash out of our account after DH. Did you leave it out anywhere maybe at a hotel or something? Gosh that sucks, but at least you will get the money back. Take that jerk!!

Nope. I never stood off post in a hotel or anything. I did in Dubai but took my purse with me everywhere. Its just crazy.

That sucks... but its so easy to grab numbers these days it could of been anywhere you used it. Or an old receipt you threw away, online, some punk at aafes, etc. Whats great is your bank was so receptive and quick, thats not an easy thing to do.

Yes I made purchases but on my government computer at work. I never did it at my room since the internet was always so bad.

omg, Dani! I swear I was thinking this! I was thinking that its the local nationals that they hire to work at the registers at the PX! Cuz the receipt that they keep when using a debit card purchase they just put it in a box. I was thinking that maybe that receipt has the numbers of my debit card. But the receipt they give back to me doesn't have it except the last 4 numbers.

It may not be the computer...it could have been the company you bought from etc. You never know what people do. They could upload spyware into their work computer and be able to get numbers etc. It is really scary how easy it actually is too!

I've not had an individual try to use my card, but I've purchased things online before (one time it was a bottle of Resvesterol, I think) for a nominal price and a couple weeks later there was an attempt to charge my card another $135...the ONLY reason it didn't go through was because I only had $100 in my account; if they'd tried to charge a lesser fee I would've lost it. I cancelled the card because my bank said they couldn't keep an individual merchant from charging my card if I'd already purchased from them. Of course, after the fact, I googled the company and discovered they'd ripped off quite a number of people that way.

Have you seen those wallets made of stainless steel? They're as soft as leather, but they can keep someone with an electronic card reader from grabbing your number. Also (the big selling point for me!) they're sharkbite proof. 'Cause apparently you need your wallet to swim with the fishes
