This morning while catching up on some news for work, I ran across this:

http://news.yahoo.com/tb-patient-cha...203440707.html

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Armando Rodriguez was warned several times to continue taking his tuberculosis medicine.
At one point, authorities said, he told his case officer he stopped the treatment out of concern for his liver while binging on alcohol and methamphetamine.
So on Tuesday, authorities took the unusual step of arresting Rodriguez and charging him with refusing to comply with a tuberculosis order to be at home at certain times and make appointments to take his medication.
It's a move that divides public health officials.
"I think it's an error to confine someone in the criminal justice system for a public health crime," said Lawrence Gostin, a Georgetown University public health law professor who drafted a model law adopted by several states struggling with the issue. "The whole intention is to protect the public's health. It's not to lay blame on someone."
Health officials say Rodriguez, 34, of Stockton has active pulmonary tuberculosis, which can include coughing up blood or phlegm and can spread through the air.
Rodriguez has been noncompliant with his treatment and could become contagious as a result, Ginger Wick, nursing director for San Joaquin County, said in a letter requesting a warrant for Rodriguez's arrest.
After failing one time to give himself the drugs, Rodriguez told a nurse he had gone on an alcohol binge and taken methamphetamine and didn't want to hurt his liver, Wick said in her letter.
Rodriguez was arrested Tuesday and is expected to be arraigned Thursday on two misdemeanor counts.
He will likely be appointed a public defender.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that usually attacks the lungs. Many people have a latent form, and the active form usually only affects adults whose immune systems are compromised, which can happen from drug use.
Public health experts are divided on the issue of mandatory treatment and criminal charges for patients who don't comply with treatment orders.
Many of those who do support criminal prosecution in the rarest of cases when public health is in jeopardy oppose the jailing of patients.
Implementing mandatory treatment should be a last resort, and prosecuting someone for disobeying a public health order is unhelpful and sends the wrong message if protecting public health is the intent, Georgetown's Gostin said.
Instead, the afflicted should be given assistance such as transportation to and from treatments rather than punishment as an incentive to take their medicine, he said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said laws to control the spread of tuberculosis have been in use for more than a century, though regulations differ in each state.
As many as 12,000 new cases of tuberculosis are reported in the country each year, the CDC reported. California recorded 2,317 new cases in 2011, a low since records have been kept.
Nonetheless, officials throughout the nation continue to struggle to stop the spread of tuberculosis, with several drug-resistant strains emerging in recent years.
Federal and state officials don't keep records of the number of people prosecuted for refusing to take their medicines. But some say it's exceedingly rare to file criminal charges in such cases.
San Joaquin County has had more than 30 tuberculosis prosecutions since 1984, prosecutor Stephen Taylor said, noting the county is more aggressive than other jurisdictions in prosecuting patients to get them to take their medication.
"The criminal cases we're dealing with generally involve drug users who are harder to treat and manage because the TB medicines conflict with street drugs," he said. "We have to throw these people in jail and treat them as in-patients. They don't cooperate as out-patients."
Karen Furst, San Joaquin County public health officer, said the county arranges transportation and other services to help patients stick to their drug regimen and turns to the legal system only as a last resort.
"I have to make sure that if I'm aware that somebody is in a position that could possibly be spreading a disease to another person, that I take steps that are necessary to prevent that from happening," she said.
Rodriguez was discharged in March from San Joaquin General Hospital with four medications for active tuberculosis and agreed to take the drugs under observation by a county health official on weekdays and on his own on weekends, authorities said.
He allegedly refused to take the drugs on another day and then was not at home on three occasions and missed an appointment.
Each charge against Rodriguez carries a maximum penalty of a year behind bars. In her letter, Wick said Rodriguez would need nine months of treatment.
_____
Associated Press writer Paul Elias in San Francisco contributed to this report.

And frankly I was absolutely stunned. I have a pretty open mind when it comes to, do what you want as long as it only effects you, but tb is so contagious and dangerous that I can't help but think the guy needs to be monitored until his case goes dormant. But criminal charges? I don't know if this is overstepping the bounds of the law, or if it is a severe solution to a serious nature.

What do you ladies think?

Hi I'm Nichole! So in 1 day my husband of a month is leaving for a 6 month deployment with me 8 weeks prego. I know being prego I shouldn't stress but I have some trust issues. He gave me plenty of reasons though. I'm trying to get over everything and see that he is changing but I'm scared to be blind sighted again.... I'm scared to get hurt. I lost a pregnancy back in march and I got prego immediately after so I can afford to stress.... But it gets so difficult... So I'm here :)

I've been absent from these parts for a while now. Most of you ladies are friends with me on the big ol' blue facebook. :)

I have a question for my knowledgeable ladies.

We are PCS'ing this summer. My husband is heading to school in Texas until February 2013. Then he has orders to report to Ft. Bliss. I am debating on staying in Georgia with family during this time and meeting up with him in February. Here's my question, if I stay in Georgia with my family, can I have my household goods shipped to Georgia, then we do a DITY move to Texas? Or does our stuff have to go in storage until husband is done at school? I swear, I need a handbook on things to do and not to do. Poor Korea is just not getting families ready.

I feel like we've been in the army for-everrrrr but this is our first 'real' PCS!

This lady is crazy excited to leave Korea. Just sayin'

THANKS! :):)

I was using the playtex drop ins and figured to switch them out and see if there might be a difference. I am currently using the Dr. Brown and I need to give it time to see any change. I am reading that the Avent bottles have done a clinical study that it helps with colic compared to any other bottle. I am so confused was wondering if anyone has some input.

I think we're going to switch over to USAA and I just wanted to ask a question or two.

First off, do you like it? How do you feel about not having an actual bank to walk into?

How do you deposit cash? I get paid in mostly cash, so that poses a problem for me. Could I keep my current bank account open, deposit cash and then transfer it over?

If you have any thing else you like/dislike about USAA's checking or savings accounts please let me know! We currently have an ATV loan through them, our car insurance and I think our home insurance. THANKS!!

This has been all over my Facebook feed for the better part of 6 months. The Marriage Protection Amendment aka Gay Marriage Ban. For those of you that aren't familiar, I am going to give a Social Studies overview of it.

http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/BillL...11&BillID=s514

Above is the link from the North Carolina General Assembly website with the information on the Amendment.

Constitution is amended by adding the following new section:
"Sec. 6. Marriage.
Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."

Above is the excerpt that was hotly contested, both through emotion and intellectual avenues.

The amendment passed overwhelmingly, and there has been a huge disparity between my circles of interaction on what the appropriate reaction should be.

I would like to know what the reaction elsewhere has been.

So I am just throwing this out there as a future mother and trying to see what you all think. So obviously in the medical fields doctor's are promoting breast milk as the healthier choice for mothers when it comes time to feeding their children. However for school I am doing some research for one of my classes and came across some studies.

Since so much of what we are exposed to these days on a daily basis is toxic they have been conducting lots of research and some of the articles I read on research have taken 100's of mother's and tested their breast milk and large percentages of women are coming back with high levels of toxins including carcinogens (even from non smokers), parabens, mercury, and a list of other poisons found in household items.....one women even had many chemicals present in their breast milk that could also be found in RAID!!!! :blink

Obviously this was just a few studies of millions out there, but it just peaked my curiosity. I'm certainly not saying it makes breast milk worse than formula....that was just the title of the study! haha I don't want anybody to think I am saying that I was just wondering about it all.

It just got me thinking about the different things we put in and on our bodies. And although a lot of it we cannot help, some of them we can. Did any of you change your daily habits (besides changing obvious things like caffeine alcohol etc) when you were breast feeding?

I have been trying to slowly go completely organic and work out meats and food with antibiotics and stuff, but then I totally forgot about bathing products and other things that we use on our body that is essentially poison too......argh is there anything that isn't harmful these days?!?!!?:?:

Well semester is done, until next set of summer class. The last few weeks have been really rough, not only because of finals and crappy papers due, but go figure I have to mix that with feeling that void because my other half isnt here. I just hits at the oddest moments. I was also upset with him because of his lack of response lately, and I know he was online bcuz I'd see him, I just let him reach out to me because he is always back and forth, and he has been really good with that at least, but of course when we are chatting I dont like to bring up stuff I put in the email because i dont want it to take away from our time right then and there. Well I addressed my issues very poignently and well that sparked a replay QUICK. I felt bad afterwards, but then I thought it was questions that needed to be answered, and I was wondering if he had even received the emails at all. Even his father would email me to have him reply to him..lol I email his parents more at this point lol Nonetheless, we hashed that out. I know my 2nd deployment around, time is compromised. But he has had time to look for places that we will vaction to during the upcoming winter, and has had time to do that. Which is what sparked my already stressful school state lol. And I because I was missing him sooo much it all just combined, that week, even the day after I registered to SO,I found myself randomly crying.. like WTH!!
Just feels like time is dragging, then I start wondering am I freakin normal to be doing this..lol I dont let him know how I get because I dont want him to worry other then just telling him how much I miss him. I figure he has his hands and plate full... and I try to maintain as much positive support as I can. but then it occassionally becomes overwhelming...because of what I'm holding in for his sake.
I dont even bring it up to my best friends as much, not like i use to.. I just deal with it on my own. Well until this site. have other experienced this the random emotional meltdowns?
I feel its harder also, because he was pcs'd to the midwest prior to deployment, so having to deal with that separation, then only seeing him after christmas. a couple days and it was off to training and then deployment.

now that classes are done for the next couple weeks.. I need to occupy my brain again, I have some reading I'd like to get in, mayb do that. I also hate feeling like im always checking to see if there is an email or maybe this is the moment he got a quick break to send a chat with a quick hello, i love and miss you.
Ughh I feel like Im not making sense lol definitely a vent lol

Thanks

I joined all these Facebook groups and pages to get the scoop on the area. OM-frickin-G It's nothing but drama, crime, and straight trash. Every day there is posts about people having things stolen -most recently a man breaking into an on house post while the wife was home-, someone is running around on their spouse, and just general PMSing venting about every little thing. It's like every landlord is the devil and you have a death wish if you drive on the main roads. It really seems like everyone hates it there.

Any excitement about my new chapter has quickly declined into "I'm going to Hell"

OK, vent over. I couldn't post on Facebook because I don't want my mom to worry about the crime rate. The good news is I'm a loner anyways so I'm not too worried about the drama and we already know not to live on post or in Killeen since those are the worst areas.

He has a head full of hair and is perfect! Dh was able to watch the whole thing with Skype which we are grateful for.

I will just briefly share the birth story since its nothing really interesting. lol. I was to be induced and arrive at the hospital at 8pm. By 9pm I received my 1st dosage of cytotec vaginally and I was already 1cm. I received 2 more dosages every hour and half. By the 3rd dosage I was still only 1 cm. They put me on pitocin at the lowest possible dosage they have. Within an hour I started feeling contractions and just like I said, I have the LOWEST PAIN TOLERANCE and asked for the epidural.

The dr came to give me my epidural and started to feel better. Within 30 mins of having the epi, I started to feel pressure which lead back to the contractions. I felt them mainly on the left side of my body. A new dr came in to redo the epidural since he said the pervious dr didnt put it in the right way and maybe thats why I still felt contractions. So he does it again and it begins to feel good. THEN AGAIN 30 mins later I started to feel the same pressure on the left side and lead to contractions.

My Dr came in and broke my water when I was 2cm. The contractions started coming quicker and I thought I was gonna die. The epidural was clearly not working so the Dr came back and injected the epi medicine straight into my IV line. Once again, it felt good but within 30 mins I started to feel the contractions. My Dr came in and checked me and I was 4cm. She told me to help the baby come down she made me lie on my left side and placed a yoga ball for me to put my right leg on top. Sounds awkward and it was painful since I was feeling the contractions and pressure of him coming down. My Dr checked me after 45 mins and I went from 4cm to 7cm!!

I had to do the same thing on the right side with the ball and within 35 mins I went from 7cm to 9cm. The pain from the contractions were becoming very unbearable for me at this point and the Epi Dr came in again to inject me with the epi straight into my IV line. Of course it didnt work and then I was 10cm and ready to push. Each contraction felt so strong I started to lose my breathing control cuz I was nearly crying from the pain. I thought this baby would never come out. I was pushing so hard and within 30 mins he came out! My Dr was very surprised since she said its very rare for a first time mom to push a baby out in 30 mins.

We were released from the hospital the next day but was offered to stay for an extra night if needed. I just wanted to go home to my own bed. I did get a 2nd degree tear and I am having a hard time recovering since I have such a low tolerance for pain.

Having Isaac finally here is something I still cant grasp. I look at him and I cant believe he is mine. I cant believe he was this once lil bean and now baby in my hands. I am so grateful to finally be a mother after TTC for over 2 years and our 4 losses. I never thought I would have a baby and now we do.
